Paper 1 Question - Allison Yore

So far this is what I have:

Twilight embodies all of the aspects of a typical love story and therefore has captured the attention of women all across the world. But despite its overwhelming number of fans, Twilight is not perfect and it raises many important question about the representation of gender. What do the women of Twilight, especially Bella, and their interaction with various men as well as one another, suggest about the role of women as seen by society and the relationship between genders?

I feel like I'm having the same problem as Alyse. I really like Twilight which is why I want to write about it, but I just want to be able to write about it with an non-bias view. I'm not sure if my question is specific enough, but I also don't want it to be too specific and limit myself. So hopefully by focusing on the women in the movie and how they act around each other and around men, I'll be able to keep the paper focused and precise.

  1. I think you can definitely build on this for a great paper. You may consider discussing the gender roles both the female and male main characters of Twilight have, and how science fiction has changed or not changed our understanding of these roles. You may also need to be more specific on whether or not you think the gender roles or stereotypes are supported or not supported in the novel.

  2. I am hoping we will both be able to write our papers without bias. I think that there are many examples of this throughout the movie. I find it interesting that Bella’s happiness seemed to be grounded in Edwards’s presence.

  3. Hi Allison,

I think it's great that both you and Alyse have chosen to work with Twilight. It's important to try to locate the deeper assumptions of the texts that surround us - perhaps especially those we really like!

I would suggest focusing your question just a bit more specifically. Perhaps you want to focus on Bella's interactions with men only, or Bella's interactions with women. The more focused you can be, the easier it will be to dive into textual specifics, and make a more original argument.

By the way, the film is still on reserve at the library. Make sure to focus on specific moments from it!

  4. P.s. When reading Twilight, you will likely want to look at aspects of a scene that go beyond "what happened" - i.e., mise-en-scene (setting, lighting, costuming, aspects of the actors' performance) and cinematography (camera angles, shot durations, color use, etc.)

  5. I do think that this might need to be specified a bit more than what you have so far, but I do think that this is a good topic to write about. It would be kind of interesting to see if science fiction intensifies, or lessens these aspects or if it has no effect at all.

  6. This does sound like it would be a very interesting paper, yet I do agree the question may need to be more specific. What exactly do you mean by society....ours or Bella's? If you decide to focus on Bella's make sure you use strong examples from the film.
